BCS and CompTIA Data+: Two Very Different Exams, One Learning Journey

As part of my data and business analysis learning path, I completed two very different certifications: BCS Business Analysis Foundation and CompTIA Data+.

Although both focus on analysis, they test very different skills and challenged me in different ways.

BCS: Thinking, Structure, and Business Context

The BCS exam is less about tools and more about how you think.

It focuses on:

• understanding business needs

• analysing problems from different perspectives

• applying structured techniques and frameworks

  
  

What I found most challenging was not memorising definitions, but learning how to recognise which concept fits a given situation. The questions often test understanding rather than recall, which forces you to really think through a scenario.

Preparing for BCS helped me slow down, read carefully, and approach problems from a broader business perspective - a skill that’s extremely valuable beyond the exam itself.

CompTIA Data+: Technical Knowledge and Practical Application

CompTIA Data+ was a very different experience.

This exam focuses more on:

• data concepts and statistics

• tools and techniques

• interpreting results and visualisation

  
  

Here, preparation required much more hands-on practice. Understanding concepts like data types, hypothesis testing, and visualisation principles was essential, but so was knowing how they are used in real analytical work.

CompTIA pushed me to strengthen my technical foundation and become more comfortable with data-focused terminology and methods.

What These Exams Taught Me

Completing both certifications showed me that being an analyst sits at the intersection of business thinking and technical skills.

BCS improved the way I approach problems and communicate with stakeholders. CompTIA strengthened my understanding of data, analysis techniques, and statistical reasoning.

Together, they helped me build a more balanced analytical mindset.

Final Thoughts

Neither exam was easy, and each challenged me in different ways. But both played an important role in shaping how I now think about data and business analysis.

For anyone starting their journey, my biggest takeaway is this: certifications are not just about passing exams - they are about developing ways of thinking that stay with you long after the test is over.
