Reporting is not the problem. Stopping there is.

I’ve seen this pattern more than once.

You have the numbers.

You have the report.

You even have a nice, clean dashboard.

Everything looks… done.

And yet nothing really changes.

Because the report answers one question:

What happened?

But the question that actually matters is still open:

What do we do about it?

I remember working in environments where results really mattered.

Targets.

Performance.

Pressure.

Seeing the numbers was never the end of the conversation.

It was the beginning.

Now, looking at it from a data perspective, I see the same thing from the other side.

A report can be technically perfect.

Clear.

Accurate.

Well-structured.

And still not help.

Because the business is not asking for numbers.

It’s trying to make a decision.

And that changes everything.

A 10% drop in sales is not just a number.

It’s a question:

Is this temporary?

Is something broken?

Do we react now or wait?

Without that layer, the report doesn’t move anything forward.

That’s the difference I keep coming back to.

Reporting shows you what happened.

But stopping there leaves the most important part untouched.

Final thought

Good reporting creates clarity.

But real value starts when you go one step further

- when you turn that clarity into a decision.
